Foursquare is a social media app that allows users to “check in” to various locations that they are in (such as bars, gyms, restaurants, etc.), and it provides them with various comments other users have left about that place. Foursquare is currently completely free to not only users, but also to businesses who want to get onto the Foursquare platform. This allows these business owners to access a very robust database of information on what users have to say, as well as when and where they are checking in, among other things.

Being a location based service, it is able to access customers wherever they actually are and provide them with information about surrounding businesses that they can actually make use of. These people are actually in the same general area of the business and could easily stop by to take advantage of a deal they read about or to try a restaurant that people have had positive things to say about. It provides much more relevant information to users. Rather than having to search through a website that catalogs many restaurants all over the place to find one nearby that you might like to try out, Foursquare all ready knows where you are and is able to provide you with information about restaurants that are nearby.

Foursquare has been so successful because its gives people deals. People are always looking for deals, its quick and convenient and the purpose of it is to be with you at all times. Its basing everything off of your location and giving incentives to go to a specific store, or restaurant. The convenience of having deals or promotions at your fingertips makes this another success. To often in today’s society people want deals, coupons, but may not have the time to search for them. The aspect of having it at your fingertips allows for people who have wanted to search to have it with little or no effort. Along with the convenience factor for promotion and deals, the aspect of being able to leave a comment and blog about a particular place will increase business, and more customer clientele, and with more chances of reaching newer customers. This playing on the huge marketing scheme of word of mouth promotion. I think is a brilliant idea, as it gives me, the consumer, incentive to go back to locations where I have been and to try new things. With the economy in its current standing, who isn’t looking for the better deal, or cheaper alternative.

    2. FourSquare is a location based service application that gives you a chance to earn points and rewards through “checking in” through your mobile phone to local businesses, restaurants, concert venues, and any other places you visit. Foursquare generates no income from these “check-ins”. However, Foursquare’s user base is growing with a huge number of 10 million users.

    1. Today, money is definitely something that people stress over. Other applications that are similar to Foursquare in the sense of a coupon application are also very popular (Groupon). I think by also integrating a “game” based element into the app, it makes using the app more interesting and attractive. Because smart phones have pretty much become a essential for everyone now, accessing or downloading the application is extremely easy for people.

To me I feel foursquare is a base of advertising and reaching customers for ones business, take the example on the video of the lounge he logged in to foursquare and it told him about a nearby restaurant (it knew his location because it is mostly for smart phones, so it was able to know where he was located) the “lounge” and then said he could get 15% off if he would go there that day. That’s a great tool for companies to use to promote their business but is also a great tool for consumers who lets say in new to an area or on vacation ad wants to know a good close by place to eat they can log on and it will be able to tell them. He also said things like that is just the foundation that companies can come up with a more creative way to utilize the application. Foursquare has been around for a few years it has said but this is the first time I have ever heard of it, he said it’s more popular in some of the same cities but besides word of mouth I’m not aware of any aggressive advertising or promotion. And with the age of mobile devices I think if they had marketed more aggressive they could have been more out there by this point. But once they are out there I do think that it will attract many companies and consumers.

Foursquare is a great idea for business owners. It is a location based advertising campaign that basically advertises to customer through there cell phone depending on where they are at. That’s one way that they advertise, but they also make a stipulation. In order to get your discount on whatever coupon you want to apply; you have to “check in”. By checking in it becomes an advertisement on the social media platform. When people check in to places it will post on their social media sites like facebook and twitter. This is a really good idea for business owners in order to spread the word of where they are, what they are, what they do, and what types of deals or coupon they are currently offering. The only minor setback is that sometimes it becomes annoying to constantly be seeing advertisements. Before today I always wondered why people would check in to places like staples or kinkos or places like that. Now I know that it was probably foursquare.

Foursquare is a location based service. What this means is, it is a service that literally follows you on your smart phone wherever you are. It is something like Facebook’s “Places” where people could check in and see where their friends checked in, except way more intuitive and useful. Any business in the area can be sent directly to your smartphone, including specific deals just for walking past their establishment. It’s a way to make your smartphone more interactive, and you are able to interact with the world around you.

What makes Foursquare so successful is two fold. It is successful to consumers because it is free, and our generation loves the idea of social networking and having our information available for the world. It is successful to businesses because they are able to get information, for free, as well as distribute advertisements directly to people in their area. Foursquare is able to make money by partnerships, since businesses will pay money for a product that is that personable.
