Ontario has achieved an important first by putting automated cars on the road for the first time, but it still has a long way to go to catch up to competitors, according to a Canadian industry association promoting automotive innovation.

The first automated vehicles are now operating on Ontario roads in a pilot project involving cars developed by the University of Waterloo, the Erwin Hymer Group and BlackBerry QNX.

Discussion

1) If you have “a long way to go”, does it make sense to continue local development?

2) Google has been testing self-driving cars for years, with millions of miles racked up.  But does a self-driving car tested on the sunny roads of California mean it will work just as well as the possibly snow-covered roads of Ontario?
